Understanding Pole Climbing Hooks

More often than not, pole climbing hooks are mistaken for climbing spurs. This is because the spikes of climbing spurs are normally called hooks as well. But even so, these two are quite different from each other.

Although spurs or gaffs would take the spotlight in terms of popularity among lineworkers, many workers in the electrical industry are aiming to have the climbing hooks. But it is found that using them is quite more challenging. In fact, it may require more training and practice to perfect the art of climbing poles using the climbing hooks.

Now, the only similarity between the climbing hooks and spurs is that they are both worn on feet to help the climbing activity and to provide safety upon ascending and descending.

Structure and Built of Climbing Hooks

Primarily, the structure and built of pole climbing hooks are very different from climbing spurs. A pair of spurs consists of shin pads and gaff for comfortability and stability respectively. On the other hand, climbing hooks do not have gaffs or shin pads. It is largely consists of straps, foot-step plate, sets of spikes, and the hooks that are adjustable according to the diameter of the pole.

Also, unlike the climbing spurs that would allow you to straighten your legs as you stay put in your position, the climbing hooks would only need minimal angle positioning of your body.

Using the Climbing Hooks

When you intend to use a pair pole climbing hooks, the very first thing you need to do is to adjust the hooks according to the size of the pole. So, you will need to place the hooks onto the pole and adjust it accordingly. Once you obtain the right circular measurement, tighten the screws just enough to keep you stuck on the position and enough to allow you step your foot.

Consequently, get the climbing hooks and secure them on your feet. Tighten the straps accordingly and try to walk it around the perimeter to settle your feet. Once you are comfortable with the adjustments, you can now then climb the pole and this is where it gets tricky.

Unlike the spikes of the normal climbing spurs, the hooks of the climbing hooks have all the chance to touch each other. This is because the hooks are like the literal ones that you would use to hook a certain material. And when this happens, this could result in slipping and falling. So, it is very important that you take each step very carefully.

Types of Climbing Hooks

By and large, there are two main kinds of pole climbing hooks. The first one is naturally meant for trees and wood poles. As for the other types, they are largely designed for concrete poles.

Apparently, the main difference between the two lies in the finishing material used in constructing the sets of spikes and the hooks. Normally, climbing hooks that are used for trees and wood poles have spikes and hooks that come with pointy ends. Conversely, climbing hooks that are designed for concrete poles use a rubber-like material on the ends of the spikes and hooks.
